Coal Tar Products

Most of our coal tar products are derived from the gas produced during the manufacture of coke at our steel plants.  Tar is also purchased from other sources and transported to the company’s tar distillation plant in Vanderbijlpark for refining.

The tar plant has a capacity of 200 000 tonnes per annum and we distil around 130 000 metric tonnes of coal tar-based products annually. The range of applications for these products include wood preservatives, road binders, pitch, paint, primary raw materials, absorbents, speciality tars and fuels.

Carbon Reductants

The division’s coke batteries have a dedicated capacity of approximately 700 000 metric tonnes per annum.  Annual sales are more than 992 000 metric tonnes per annum, comprising own production and ad hoc production from metallurgical coke facilities.  This low and medium phosphorus commercial coke is marketed in various fractions and sizes:

-              30mm+

-              6 - 30mm

-              0 - 6mm

Acid Regeneration

The acid regeneration process involves the beneficiation of Spent Pickling Liquor (SPL), a ferrous chloride solution from steel pickling processes.  The total annual acid regeneration capacity is approximately 75 000 metric tonnes.

The plant is situated in Vanderbijlpark and regenerates SPL acid used to clean manufactured steel at pickling plants, while a portion is also used  internally in sinter and effluent treatment plants.  The iron oxide, which is a co-product of the acid regeneration process, is supplied to the chemical industry as a source of iron.

Steel By-Product

This division markets various steel by-products generated by the steel plants, which includes:

-           Blast furnace slag used primarily in the manufacture of cement;

-           Mill scale, which is used as a source of iron in the non-ferrous, ferro-alloy and chemical industries; and

-           Ammonium sulphate, which is used as fertiliser.
